I'm back from a 2 week stint in Abaco, Bahamas; a magical place with beautiful ocean views, friendly faces, and unfortunately relatively expensive food. Being a relatively small, dry island they have a LOT of goods imported from the states and it can make double, triple or even quadruple the price of what you would expect to pay at a grocery store here in the States. As a result, many people down there have poorer diets (though not as bad since they can get fresh seafood cheaply and then spend more money on produce) but they also eat a heavy amount of carbohydrates and (surprise surprise) hive a high rate of diabetes. Fortunately, it is a very relaxed environment even for businesses. How can you not be happy surrounded by turquoise waters with the sun shining every day and happy Bahamian music streaming out of every restaurant, storefront, dive shop and car. So they have less stress, which is obviously as health benefit. I know fully appreciate the need for R and R that we all need. I have to go to a place like that in order to do it, because otherwise I will keep myself too busy and not accomplish the task at hand.
I would encourage everyone to take 30 mins a day to rest; don't read, don't make phone calls, don't even watch TV- simply try to truly relax. Like a mini mind vacation. For anyone still struggling with stress, like myself, give us a call and see what we can do to help you reduce it here at the Prather Wellness Center. Whether it be through massage, meridian therapy, or even homeopathic remedies to combat stress or promote healthy deep sleep there is probably something cheaper than a beachfront vacation to tide you over! But if you ever get the chance to go play in the sun and sand, take it!
